Prototype
The ships of the "27-knots" type "Boxer" and the ships of the same type "Ardent" and "Bruiser" were onstructed at the shipyards of the firm "Thornycroft". They had a steel hammered stem with a ram formation in the underwater part, a typical rounded stern with a slope to the water; the mast was placed almost close to the bow funnel. In the sea trials the "Boxer" was able to develop the speed of 29, 175 knots. It was the second result among 36 ships of the program of the years 1893-1894. The power plant consisted of 2 three-cylinder steam triple-expansion engines, the work of which was provided by 3 water-tube boilers. In the period from May 1896 till 1911 the "Boxer" served in the Mediterranean Sea, and then was returned into the waters of the mother country. During the First World War it was a part of the Portsmouth defense flotilla. On 8 February 1918 at 07:00 it collided in the area of Isle of Wight during the storm with the British hospital vessel "St. Patrick" and got heavy damages. The attempt was made to throw out to the coastal sand bank, but the ship sank at the distance of 2,5 miles from the coast.
